Artist Bio - Helen Retynsky Kamins

Helen Retynsky Kamins has been in the business of visual communication her entire life. After graduating with a BFA degree from the University of Massachusetts, she moved to Boston and proceeded to advance through the commercial design field, ultimately holding the position of Corporate Art Director for a fortune 500 Company.

Desiring a greater challenge, Kamins studied at M.I.T, Boston University, and Northeastern University in order to learn the newest technology related to art, computer graphics. She became a pioneer in the field and traveled extensively from 1983 to 1986 consulting for clients including 3M, Digital, and General Electric. She then established a production facility in Boston, HR GRAPHICS, Inc., which serviced the video and interactive media industries for 10 years. Kamins was known for her technical rendering capabilities, and often gravitated towards educational projects. She illustrated a videotape series of open-heart surgical procedures for the Children’s Hospital in Boston that was distributed worldwide. In 1996, choosing to spend more time to raise her children, Ms. Kamins left the computer graphics industry and a rebirth of her personal fine arts work quickly emerged.

A consistent visual theme that can be seen in Kamins’ work is her interest in the juxtaposition of the untamed or wild with the ordered or precise. Close observation of brush strokes in her paintings reveals a perpetual interaction created by positioning careful, controlled areas next to flamboyant and powerful applications. The artist occasionally challenges traditional rules of composition and enjoys experimenting with geometric expressions. Her paintings have been described as confident and vibrant, attributed to a strong history of illustration, visual communication, and lifelong passion of studying the natural world.

Helen Kamins’ work can be found in private collections in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Tokyo and London. The artist resides on Cape Ann, Massachusetts with her two sons, and is a breast cancer survivor.
